Think the Super Bowl is the largest event in the World? Maybe the Olympics? Not by a long shot! The FIFA World Cup is the largest one-sport event in the World. Thirty two teams will take the pitch in Brazil beginning June 12, 2014 and only one team will prevail - will it be your team? Will you be there? Ludus Tours will be on the ground in Brazil and we want to take you on the experience of a lifetime!
The World Cup is an international tournament hosted every four years by the international governing body of soccer, Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). The inaugural tournament was played in 1930 and the last one in 2010 (South Africa).
The tournament itself lasts approximately one month and is contested by 32 teams from around the world. The qualification phase, however, takes almost 3 years and is hosted all over the world. The first two weeks comprise the Group Stage, which wittles the 32 teams down to 16. The 2nd round reduces the field to 8, from there the Quarterfinals reduce the number of teams to 4 & they advance to the Semifinals. There are 2 Semifinal matches and the winners of those teams advance to the World Cup Final, which determines the team which will call themselves World Cup champions for the next 4 years.
Although there have been 19 World Cup tournaments, only 8 different national teams have ever won the prestigious trophy. England, France & Spain each boast one title, Argentina & Uruguay have won two each, Germany has won three times, Italy has won four times and Brazil has won the tournament a record five times. This is part of the mystique that makes the 2014 tournament so special and an event surely not to be missed!
